Security and access

With more than 7,000 people working on the premises of the European Parliament and more than 500,000 visitors received by Parliament every year, security plays an essential role in ensuring the smooth running of the institution.

The European Parliament – the only European Union institution elected by direct universal suffrage – thus protects people and property in its buildings and receives all its visitors efficiently, while maintaining the right balance between an adequate level of security and the traditional attitude of openness.

As gathering and processing of personal data are necessary in order to effectively carry out its role, the European Parliament attaches great importance to the right to privacy, seeking constantly to ensure compliance with the current legislation on personal data protection.

Data protection

The European Parliament processes personal data requested from the Members of the European Parliament (MEP), staff, contractors, visitors and internal/external partners for the following purposes:

  • Granting access to European Parliament’s premises;
  • Controlling access to European Parliament's premises;
  • Investigating security incidents, conducting security inquiries and auxiliary investigations; evaluating threats and analysing risks for the EP.

Video surveillance

The European Parliament operates a video surveillance system, monitoring its buildings and perimeter. The system is used for safety and security purposes only. In accordance with guidelines by the European Data Protection Supervisor, the European Parliament has a Video-Surveillance Policy which contains all relevant characteristics of the system, as well as information relating to data protection and contact details.
